Road trip!

This weekend some of our Guild members travelled to Toronto to visit the Distillery District and The Purple Purl (also known as a little piece of heaven). Here are a couple of pictures they took along the way. Leave it to our crew to make a trip on the GO Train look fun and exciting!

Tips from Kate + Homework from Needle Emporium + Knitter's Frolic and more!

Wow! What a busy month!

It was great to have Kate Atherley visit us for our April meeting. Kate had many great tips and suggestions for achieving a proper and flattering fit and I've posted them all here for your convenience. You can order Kate's book, Beyond Knit and Purl, via The Needle Emporium or via Kate's website.

And speaking of The Needle Emporium, Julie has provided the homework for the Linen Stitch lesson she'll be teaching at our May meeting, which you can find here.

Julie will also be at the Knitter's Frolic happening April 28-29 at the Japanese Cultural Centre in Toronto. The Frolic is great fun with lots of vendors and classes, and you can find all the information you need right here.

And if that's not enough knitting action for you, the CreativFestival is also taking place April 27-28 at the International Centre on Airport Road in Mississauga.

So many knitting events, so little time. Enjoy!

Linen stitch workshop - homework

This is the homework sent by Julie from the Needle Emporium for the Linen Stitch workshop she'll be giving at our May 1st meeting:

Please use worsted weight (Cascade 220, Berroco Ultra Alpaca, Filatura di Crosa Zara Plus) or thicker yarn

-Solid colours

-Easy to see colours-no black, navy, dark brown

NOTE-WE NEED TO USE A BIGGER NEEDLE THAN THE BALL BAND SAYS. IF THE BALL BAND SAYS 4MM NEEDLES THEN WE NEED TO USE 5MM. IF THE BALL BAND SAYS 4.5MM THEN WE NEED TO USE 5.5MM

Cast on 20 stitches (it doesn't matter which cast on you use) before coming to class. Please bring at least one stitch marker with you.

Wise words from Wise Hilda's Kate Atherley

Here is the list of tips, books and websites Kate mentioned in her chat with us at our April meeting. But first, and most importantly, here is a link to Kate's blog.

First: knit a swatch! Here is Kate's handy guide to knitting the very necessary tension swatch.

Ann Budd Knits: All of Ann Budd's books are listed on this site, but Kate made particular mention of The Knitter's Handy Book of Sweater Patterns, which you can find at Chapters/Indigo and through the Hamilton Public Library.

Amy Herzog - Fit to Flatter: here you can find helpful tutorials on finding the best fit and she even uses REAL women as models! This is just one of the tutorials available.

Sweater Design in Plain English by Maggie Righetti: this book will help you create the proper fit. It's available through Chapters, but as with any knitting book you can check to see if it's in stock at The Needle Emporium and support a local shop:)

Yarndex.com is a great yarn directory, particularly useful for vintage yarns.

And for vintage patterns, try A Stitch in Time by Jane Waller and Susan Crawford.

Happy knitting and fitting everyone!

Next meeting April 3rd

Hello knitters!

Our next meeting is Tuesday, April 3rd at the Marlatt Family Centre in Dundas.

This month we have a guest speaker - Kate Atherley. Kate is a brilliant knitter who teaches throughout the GTA. She'll talk with Guild members about sizing in knitting. So if you have a pattern that is causing you difficulties size-wise, please bring it in and Kate will do her best to help.

See you on Tuesday!
